I'm glad to hear you were able to get a Gear for yourselves to use! The Gear can be used for communication, yes, and you can also play games on it and use the Pokedex on it...
As for something good, um...I got a Poochyena a few days ago who happens to be the younger sibling of a Mightyena that I got when a friend of mine left Johto.
He was very sad his trainer left, so now he is very happy to have a little sister around.

I suggest finding apps that make clear noises to show when things have been accomplished. Part of the Gear is touch screen, but there are some buttons as well that they can use to perform different functions. The different shapes and textures of the buttons should help.
